 GUYANA FUNDRAISING TRUST

Role :    Registered in 1989 the Guyana Fundraising Trust's main

              objective is to provide medical supplies and equipment to

              enable Guyanese hospitals to provide the best healthcare

              where possible to its patients.

             The charity has teamed up on numerous occasions with 'Kids

             First Fund' (a charity which provides emergency and medical

             assistance to the poor and needy children of Guyana ) and has

             extended its remit to raise money and help provide items

             additional to medical supplies for several important projects.

             Money is raised through charity dances, sponsored dinners,

             sponsored walks, group outings and generous donations.

GUYANESE GOLF ASSOCIATION

Role:              The Association is currently in it's 10th year and is a

                       friendly society of Guyanese golfers and friends. The

                       standard of golf is not crucial. We are looking for new

                       members (both male and female) to add to our numbers 

                       and all are welcome. We meet and play together 5 or 6

                       times a year at various courses, mostly but not

                       exclusively around South and West London and outlying

GUYANA LAW ASSOCIATION (UK)

Role:  The Guyana Law Association (GLA) (UK) was launched six years ago after a visit by the then Chancellor Hon Desiree Bernard when she addressed the diaspora lawyers (at a meeting arranged under the patronage of the High Commissioner, His Excellency Laleshwar Singh). The Chancellor requested assistance for the Justice System in Guyana and welcomed the initiative of the GLA (UK) to collect and transport donated law books and computers to Guyana.

 

Since then, with encouragement and help from the High Commissioner several shipments of books, law reports and computers have been sent to Guyana. The books and law reports valued at over £1M are housed in the Supreme Court's Library, the Law Library in Berbice, the University of Guyana and are available for all practitioners and students to use. It is also envisaged that a collection of law books and reports will be available at the Court Houses throughout Guyana.

 

In August 1995, under the good auspices of the UNDP and the Chancellor (Actg.), Hon. Carl Singh, four members of the Association, namely, Colin Bobb Semple, Deonarine Singh, Lal Nawbatt and Crown Court Recorder Charles Wilson QC, conducted training workshops in Guyana for (Stipendiary Magistrates) and Police Prosecutors at the Supreme Court and Police Headquarters.

 

For the past three years the Association has held informative career workshops for law students and undergraduates.

 

GLA (UK) has held and continues to hold many fundraising events to cover the costs of the collection and shipment of the books, law reports and computers received.
