THE NATIONAL BIRD
The Canje Pheasant, or Hoatzin (Opisthocomus Hoazin), is about 55-65 cm long from bill to tail but weighs less than 1kg.
The feathers on its back are reddish-brown streaked with green; those on its underside are pale brown; those at the root of
the neck and on the wings are edged with a creamy-white colour. On the Canje Pheasant's head is a crest of long feathers
which gives it a majestic look. A ring of pale blue skin surrounding its crimson eyes and a short beak add the finishing
touches to its unique appearance.
THE NATIONAL FLOWER
The Victoria Regia (Victoria amazonica) is a perennial lily, native to tropical America. It grows in one to two metres of
water, the base of the stems being situated in soft mud. From each plant, there are seldom more than four or five leaves.
The largest flowers can measure between 25 and 30 cm in diameter. When they first open, they are white with a sweet smell,
rather like ripe fruit; by the second day, they are fully expanded and have a deeper pink hue; by the third day, they start
to wither.
ARAPAIMA FISH
Belongs to the Ancient Order - Isopondyli which includes Herrings, Tarpon, Salmon and Trout. The Arapaima is the largest
fresh water fish in the world and has a length of 6 feet and weighs about 200 pounds.
